Mardi Gras PhotoTeam Selected

Immediate release, 19.2.10

A talented team of five emerging photographers has been selected to make up this year’s official Mardi Gras PhotoTeam. They were selected from entrants in a national competition.

The successful applicants are:

•  Connie Chan, photographic assistant;

•  Stephanie Mellon who is currently completing her honours in photography at Brisbane’s Griffith University;

•  Zelko Nedic, photographic assistant,

•  Richard Kendell, who has just graduated with distinction in scientific photography from RMIT in Melbourne; and

•  Jonathan May, a photographer’s assistant, who also won 2009 “Shoot the Chef”

Applicants were asked to submit a folio of images, which were reviewed blindly (ie with the applicant’s identity concealed). The selection panel consisted of the photo editor of Lonely Planet Images, Glenn Beanland, the Creative Director of Head On photographic festival, Moshe Rosenzveig, Head of Marketing & Communications at New Mardi Gras, Damien Eames and the producer of the PhotoTeam project Robert McGrath.

Robert is very pleased with the resulting team. “It’s a team of diverse talents, reflecting the different orientations each of the panel members has to the uses of photography.”

The PhotoTeam is undertaking its assignment through a mentored program provided by Robert of  McG Photographic and supported by New Mardi Gras. “Mardi Gras is committed to providing real world opportunities to emerging talent especially as we stage what has to be, Australia’s most creative and photogenic mass event”, said Mardi Gras’ Mardi Gras’ head of marketing and communications, Damien Eames.

As a mentored program for emerging photographers, team members will gain vital, early career experience and recognition with their images being streamed through the World Square LiveSite throughout the Festival. Also their work will be assessed by Lonely Planet Images for possible commercial use and will be included in a slide show exhibition during the Head On photographic festival later in the year.

You can follow the Mardi Gras PhotoTeam’s progress on the their dedicated Mardi Gras webpage (www.mardigras.org.au) or at the World Square LiveSite, exclusive venue for slide shows of their work, updated continually throughout the Festival.
